Stevenson University is pleased to announce that its Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology program has been granted the initial accreditation status of Accredited, on Contingency by the American Psychological Association’s Commission on Accreditation (APA CoA), effective as of October 24, 2025.* Stevenson graduates its first Psy.D. candidates this spring and summer, and the program will welcome 21 students for its Fall 2026 cohort.

This accreditation marks a milestone for the University, representing the successful culmination of more than five years of planning, development, and rigorous evaluation. As Stevenson’s first doctoral program, the Psy.D. reflects the institution’s continued commitment to academic excellence and innovation, and to programs focused on career preparation for professional fields.

“Receiving APA accreditation not only reflects the academic excellence of our Doctor of Psychology program, but is a historic accomplishment for our entire institution,” said Meredith Durmowicz, Ph.D., Stevenson’s Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs and Provost. “I would like to acknowledge and thank the administrators and faculty of our Psy.D. program: Dr. Marie McGrath, Dr. Soonhee Lee, Dr. Colleen Spada, Dr. Ryan Willard, and Dr. Virginia Iannone, as well as all the students, faculty, and staff from across Stevenson who participated in October’s APA site visit. Their hard work and dedication built this program and made this achievement possible.”

“Today marks a significant milestone for Stevenson’s Psy.D. program,” said Marie McGrath, Ph.D., Graduate Program Director and Professor, Clinical Psychology. “This accreditation affirms that our program meets APA’s quality standards for training future psychologists in the scientific foundations and best practices of our discipline, preparing them to deliver high-quality clinical services to the public.”

Developed in response to the growing demand for highly trained clinical psychologists, Stevenson’s Psy.D. program prepares students to serve diverse populations across Maryland and beyond. Since enrolling its inaugural cohort in Fall 2021, the program has grown to 70 students across five cohorts.

Rooted in a practitioner-scholar model, the five-year program emphasizes rigorous academic and clinical training, as well as mentorship by faculty who are licensed psychologists with substantial experience in clinical practice. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience through coursework, clinical training, and research experiences, preparing them to attain psychology licensure and to deliver a range of evidence-informed clinical services to individuals and populations with diverse identities and experiences.

As an intermediate milestone, students are eligible to receive a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology upon successful completion of their second year. This enables them to pursue registration as a Psychology Associate with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists and access additional opportunities for supervised professional practice and further clinical training as they complete the program.

“George and I believe in the power of higher education to transform lives and strengthen communities,” Reynolds said. “Stevenson prepares students to not only succeed in their careers, but to help solve the challenges facing the world today. We are proud to support that work and invest in the next generation of leaders.”

Jennifer Reynolds has been serving her current term on Stevenson’s Board of Trustees since 2018. Twice named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record, she currently serves as Vice Chair of the National Aquarium’s Board of Directors and previously served on the boards of the Walters Art Museum, Sheppard Pratt Hospital, and the Baltimore School for the Arts.

George Reynolds is a retired attorney with Miles & Stockbridge, where he focused on estate planning and administration. He is a past Maryland State Chair of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and has served on several nonprofit boards, including the Walters Art Museum, the Howard County Conservancy, and the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation.

Stevenson University officially opened the new Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Performing Arts Center after a formal dedication ceremony on Tuesday, March 31.

Officiated by MPT’s Jeff Salkin, the event was attended by Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier, philanthropist and Stevenson Board of Trustees member Sandra Berman, Phyllis and Louis Friedman, and Baltimore County Councilmen Izzy Patoka and Julian Jones, Jr. as well as Stevenson leadership, staff, faculty, and students. The dedication concluded with a ribbon cutting ceremony and inaugural performances by Stevenson students, alumni, and members of the Maryland Opera.

The 38,000-square-foot Berman Family Performing Arts Center is the capstone addition to Stevenson’s bustling North Campus Academic Hub and represents the university’s strong commitment to the arts. As the new home for the performing arts at Stevenson, the Center will enrich campus life by hosting student theater, music, and dance performances, as well as cultural events, fashion shows, and guest speakers throughout the year.

The Berman Family Performing Arts Center will support academic programs and performances in its two state-of-the-art venues—the Herman and Walter Samuelson Foundation Black Box Theatre and the Phyllis Cole Friedman Concert Hall. Both venues will serve students in Theatre and Media Performance, Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising, and Film and Moving Image, bachelor’s programs, as well as students participating in Stevenson’s music and dance programs. The Berman Family Performing Arts Center will also host arts and cultural programs as part of Stevenson’s Arts Alive! initiative.

The Berman Family Performing Arts Center is equipped with industry-standard technology and professional-grade equipment, including a tension wire grid ceiling and advanced digital audio systems. Students working on productions will gain hands-on production experience to help prepare them for careers in the performing arts and related industries.

“The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Performing Arts Center would not have been possible without the friendship and generosity of Sandra Berman and her late husband Malcolm, Phyllis and Louis Friedman, and our many other donors,” said Elliot Hirshman, Ph.D., President of Stevenson. “Thanks to their support, generations of students will be inspired to explore the arts, develop their talents, and express their creativity in a truly state-of-the-art environment.”

Founded in 1947, Stevenson University today serves more than 3,700 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
